Study: Triple-row repair improves rotator cuff contact area, pressure

Researchers found that using a triple-row repair improved rotator cuff contact area and contact pressure compared with double-row and suture-bridge techniques, according to research recently published in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.
“We demonstrated that the triple-row repair results in significantly more rotator cuff footprint contact area and contact pressure when compared to the standard suture-bridge and double-row techniques,” Roger V. Ostrander III, MD, from the Andrews Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center in Gulf Breeze, Fla., told Orthopedics Today. “This more anatomic repair maximizes rotator cuff footprint contact area which may improve the healing rate when performing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.
Ostrander and his colleague Bart I. McKinney, MD, repaired 18 ovine infraspinous tendons using a double-row repair, a triple-row repair or the suture-bridge technique, according to the abstract. They described the triple-row technique as a modification to the suture-bridge technique that uses an additional anchor between the medial and lateral rows. The researchers found the triple-row repair had significantly more footprint contact and contact pressure compared to the other repairs, according to the abstract.
“This modification has some distinct benefits. It enables the surgeon to reconstruct the footprint more anatomically for difficult large tear repairs,” Ostrander said. – by Jeff Craven
